Abschlussarbeiten / Thesis

The Chair of Macroeconomics offers bachelor and master thesis' on current topics in our research areas.

Voraussetzungen / Requirements

Students who would like to write a thesis at the Chair of Macroeconomics should have completed the basic course "Macroeconomics" (AVWL II) and at least one further course at the Chair. Ideally you have also completed one of our bachelor's or master seminars.

Themenfindung / Topic selection

Our scientific staff offer topics from their own research. You can find a list of current topics below.

In addition there is the opportunity to suggest your own topic. To ensure adequate support your topic should match the research interests of the chair of macroeconomics (macroeconomics, monetary economics, financial crises, and experimental economics).

Themen / Topics

Topic 1: Reasons for the slowdown in productivity growth

Content: Various empirical studies have found a decline in the growth rate of total factor productivity. This has been observed for most advanced economies at least during the last two decades. There could be various reasons behind this development: a decline in the efficiency of research, systematic measurement errors, sectoral change, an acceleration in the depriciation of physical and/or human capital, lower capital intensity in the growing IT sector, increasing bureaucracy - there may be others. This thesis should first lay out the empirical findings regarding the slowdown in productivity growth, and then analyze the potential reasons behind this development in the light of the scientific literature.

Research Area: Macroeconomics

Topic 2: Sustainable growth in the light of climate change

Content: The Solow model is the basis for understanding the connection between savings capital accumulation and growth. In the 1970s, this model was extended to capture the usage of ressources as a second state variable (besides capital). Later came extensions that capured endogenous human capital formation. This thesis should lay out the further development of standard growth models in the light of the debate about climate change. Some questions that could be raised in this thesis fall in the area of descriptive theory, for example: How do external effects in the usage of natural ressources affect the growth path of a market economy? How is the savings rate affected by the prospect of climate change? Other questions are closer related to normative theory, as: How can optimal growth be defined, when issues of intergenerational distribution arise? How do externalities affect the relation between the growth path arising in a market economy and an optimal growth path? How does the optimal growth path depend on eventual tipping points? Finally, we also want to attempt some conclusions and recommendations for policy.
